A dictionary word that had to earn its extension
Outcome
- Cleared pre-announcement
- Handles secured

The founders wanted a word meaning trust without using the word trust. We shortlisted nine candidates against their category vocabulary and cleared the chosen mark in two trademark classes before the seed round announced.
The brief
Trust is the whole product in risk analytics, which is exactly why the word is unusable. Every competitor leans on it or on its near neighbours, and a name built from the obvious vocabulary disappears into the category on first contact. The founders wanted the meaning without the word: a name a risk officer would read as credible before reading anything else.
They also had a date. The seed round was going to announce, and the name had to be chosen, cleared and secured before it did. A name that first surfaces in a funding announcement, with its marks and handles still open, is a name somebody else can get to first.
The work
We mapped the category's vocabulary first, so we knew which words and roots the competition already owned, then generated against the brief through Dotly.ai and cut hard. Each of the nine names on the shortlist arrived with its pronunciation, meaning, extension fit and availability, presented as a position the company could take rather than a word on a slide.
The founders chose a dictionary word. A real word carries meaning for free, but it also carries more trademark exposure than an invented one, so the clearance mattered more than usual. Class collisions and adjacent marks were mapped in the two classes the business would trade in, and written up in plain language for counsel.
A dictionary word earns its extension by being defensible, not by being available.
How it closed
The mark was cleared in both classes before the round announced. The dot and the matching handles were secured together, ahead of any public signal, because a handle sweep that waits for the announcement is a sweep somebody else has already run. When the news went out, every address it pointed to already belonged to the company.
